October is recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness month in a nationwide effort to bring awareness to and educate communities on the reality of domestic violence, support survivors and advocates, and provide resources and information about ways we can work together to bring it to an end.

Ruth’s House launched the Purple Porch Project to help bring awareness to these efforts in our community. The color purple is used to honor survivors and represent the strength and courage it takes to stand against domestic violence. From August to October, we are working to light up our community in purple and do our part to end the silence surrounding domestic violence.

Throughout this campaign, we are participating in various community events such as The Defeat of Jesse James Day Parade, Dundas Oktoberfest, and The Faribault Fall Festival. Supporting victims of domestic violence is a key component of the care at our shelters, and we are holding a raffle to raise funds for our mission of creating safety and hope for our residents. We will be raffling prizes such as:

• A custom-built children’s playhouse
• A water lily pad
• A children’s swingset
