Nã mea Kaiãulu “Community Matters”
For the last year, I have been writing and submitting articles on community and what makes a vibrant and fully functioning community- all from the perspective of Ruth’s House. Community is essential because it provides support and a sense of belonging, helping individuals to feel connected and valued. It fosters collaboration and shared resources, enabling people to achieve common goals that might be difficult to reach alone. Additionally, a strong community encourages personal growth and resilience by offering a network of encouragement and understanding during challenging times.
Last Friday I had the opportunity to witness, yet again, how our Rice County community comes together in support of each other and specifically in support of the women and children in crisis served by Ruth’s House. “Kaiãulu “is the Hawaiian word for community. Over 350 members of our Rice County kaiãulu came together to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Ruth’s House on Friday, August 23 at the Apple Creek Orchard. We are so thankful for the demonstration of support from our kaiãulu who honored us by sponsoring the event and providing food and entertainment for everyone who attended.
If you have ever been to Hawaii, you will frequently hear the word ‘ohana. This is the word for “family” in the Hawaiian language. ‘Ohana was also a strong theme for our anniversary celebration. All of our evening events were family-oriented with games for children provided by our community partners. Many past and present residents of Ruth’s House were in attendance and had yet another opportunity to feel the support of our kaiãulu and the love of ‘ohana. Thank you one and all for 20 years of love and support for Ruth’s House and our residents.
