Feeling stressed

November 1, 2024

Tara’s Story

I’m feeling stressed. I know I share this feeling with so many others around me. Is it political drama, winter preparations, or world events looming?  So many things that are not under my control. It seems important at times like these to focus on just how resilient our community truly is and has long been. Through history, we have proven ourselves to be a caring and resilient community of friends, co-workers, families, and neighbors even in the face of stress and trauma. Let me share a story that highlights our shared care and resilience.

According to former Ruth’s House resident, Tara: “It’s been almost three years since I first walked through Ruth’s House doors feeling just hopeless and helpless. Today, because of the assistance that this program has provided me, I have reached so many goals that I thought were impossible to obtain. I have my own affordable and stable housing; both my oldest and youngest sons are back; I’m still sober; I got my driver’s license back. And I’m still gainfully employed at the same job. On top of that, I am now going to school to be a Chemical Dependency Counselor!

Ruth’s House showed me that I was deserving of good things. I just needed someone, actually anyone, to believe in me and not give up on me. Without housing assistance, I would never have been able to make it financially as a single parent. Also, having a case manager to meet with me every week has helped me immensely. Not only was she there when I needed guidance, encouragement, or just a friendly ear, but also was there if I needed to get groceries or get to an appointment. Because of the services that Ruth’s House offered me, my life is in the best place that it has ever been. Thank you!”

Hundreds of our community members have donated to and volunteered for Ruth’s House. You make it possible for us to achieve our mission and provide the one-on-one support for women like Tara and her children.

So, as we worry collectively about the future, I encourage you to take a moment to be proud that we live in a resilient Community that Cares. Many thanks from all of us at Ruth’s House.
