Domestic violence, poverty, addiction, health challenges, or other issues can lead to homelessness or feeling unsafe in one’s home. Ruth’s House mission is Empowering lives, offering hope through transitional housing and support.

Typical Day in the Life

A typical shift as a Family Advocate might include the following

  • Getting resident supplies from the basement
  • Playing peek-a-boo with a child 
  • Have lunch with a resident
  • Answer the phone
  • Help the resident fill out necessary paperwork
  • Listen to a resident share their store
  • Light housekeeping
  • Recording donations
  • Maintaining safety in the house
  • Models healthy communication

Case Manager+

The Case Manager for Ruth’s House located in Faribault, Women, and Children Emergency/Transitional Shelter for nine families, and Sarah’s House located in Northfield, a sober house for five women. This position will provide case management services to both programs. 

The case manager will provide a model that residents can follow by maintaining a consistent and healthy living environment. We use strength-based approaches meaning the Case Manager and resident work together to develop and create an individualized case plan to promote long-term stability in their lives. 

Residents and Case Managers should work together to identify personal barriers and develop a person-centered plan. This plan will address current barriers, strategies, and techniques that residents can use during a crisis. The Case Manager will serve as a resource for the residents when needed. Reports to Program Director.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Meet with residents individually at least once a week. During these meetings, the case manager should review residents’ plans and see if they are making progress on their goals. 
  • Model healthy communication and boundaries with residents. 
  • Complete Intakes for both Ruth’s House and Sarah’s House.
  •  Provide crisis management and de-escalation strategies as needed. 
  • Maintain confidential resident files in our case management software. 
  • Participate in staff meetings, workshops, conferences, MASH meetings, or other training essential to professional growth.
  • Ability to prioritize organization and resident needs in a variety of situations in coordination with Program Director.
  • Must be able to advocate for resident needs in the community such as healthcare, housing, court, financial assistance, CPS, and other agencies.
  • Adhere to program guidelines including resident expectations – for example, there is a zero-tolerance policy for illegal drugs or alcohol.  
  • Communicate and be proactive with government and other local agencies such as the county services regarding resident benefits such as Housing Support, and adhere to deadlines, ensuring proper and complete form completion and submission.
  • Coordinate with Ruth’s House Administration regarding residents’ bed fees and programmatic expenses including deposits and grocery orders. 
  • Facilitate communication with state-wide treatment facilities regularly, promoting Sarah’s House programming.
  • Complete urine analysis as needed.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for all residents. Ensure all policies and procedures are adhered to. 
  • Participate in monthly house meetings at Ruth’s House.
  • Coordinate weekly meetings with Sarah’s House residents and monthly house meetings.
  • Inspect Sarah’s House every week to include all rooms in the house, including bedrooms. This will ensure that residents comply with their contracts and maintain the facility’s structural safety. 
  • Meet with the Program Director 45 minutes a week.
  • Communicate with Sarah’s House landlord regarding any structural issues or any other maintenance needs. 
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize between programs depending on resident needs and caseload.

Requirements for Position

  • Prefer a bachelor’s degree or an associate degree in a related field.
  • Must be professional with strong boundaries and ethics. 
  • Must be able to work independently and also in a team.
  • Must be available to work occasional evenings, holidays, and two-weekend shifts/month.
  • Must be available on call for emergency situations for Sarah’s House.
  • Must be able to handle professional feedback.
  • Possess good communication skills to empower and support staff and residents. 
  • The ability to work with diverse populations. 
  • Must be highly organized and have the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to provide trauma-informed care and sustain accountability to individualized plans and overall program expectations.
  • Understanding of confidentiality practices. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance. 
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) and other relevant software applications.
  • Ability to learn new software applications.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to lift 20-25 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairs.

FT Evening Family Advocate+

The Evening Family Advocate plays an important role at Ruth’s House. This position requires
someone who is the Lead Family Advocate’s go-to person. This person must be dependable and
trustworthy and is expected to fulfill all of the Family Advocate duties with an extraordinary
degree of skill, and dependability and be competent and consistent in everything they do. This
position needs to have clear and appropriate communication with the Program Director when
situations arise with residents or other staff. EFA must maintain professional boundaries
with residents, knowing that they also need to inform the Program Director of any concerns or
issues that the residents may have.

Work Requirements:

  • Maintain strong daily communication with the Lead Family Advocate.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply proper behavior management skills and model them
    for residents and be able to communicate these skills with a clear understanding.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions relative to accident and incident
    reports/investigations and the reporting of injury or special incidents. Must
    communicate with the Lead Family Advocate and the Program Director if necessary.
  • Must possess a level of maturity that includes the ability to avoid association with
    gossip.
  • Ability to demonstrate their willingness to adjust their schedule for the needs of the
    agency.

Minimum Requirements

  • Skilled and knowledgeable with Google Suites.
  • Must be able to multi-task and prioritize tasks.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to lift 20-25 pounds.
  • Valid driver’s license
