Ruth’s House is hiring multiple Weekend Family Advocates to support our shelter team.

  • Shift 1: Every other Saturday, 3pm–11pm, followed by a sleeping overnight shift from 11pm–7am

  • Shift 2: Every Sunday, 7am–3pm is also available

Who We Are

Ruth’s House provides transitional shelter and support for women and children in crisis. Domestic violence, poverty, addiction, health challenges, or other issues can lead to homelessness or feeling unsafe in one’s home. Ruth’s House mission is Empowering lives, offering hope through transitional housing and support.

Typical Day in the Life

A typical shift as a Family Advocate might include the following

  • Getting resident supplies from the basement
  • Playing peek-a-boo with a child
  • Have lunch with a resident
  • Answer the phone
  • Help the resident fill out necessary paperwork
  • Listen to a resident share their store
  • Light housekeeping
  • Recording donations
  • Maintaining safety in the house
  • Models healthy communication

Development Manager+

  1. Job Summary:  The Development Manager represents Ruth’s House of Hope to the customers and the communities in which Ruth’s House participates, using the organization’s standards of conduct and guiding philosophies to promote the well-being of the residents the organization supports.  The Development Manager will be primarily responsible for Financial Development, Public Relations, and Marketing.  This is a full-time salaried position, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week, typically from Monday – Friday.  S/he also functions as a member of the Administrative Team. Development responsibilities will be completed under The Code of Ethical Principles and Standards of Professional Practice established by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP).
  2. Conditions of Employment:  The Development Manager must pass our background check and maintain that eligibility.  Upon hire, s/he must be able to prove that s/he has valid work status.
  3. Reporting Responsibilities:  The Development Manager reports to the Executive Director.  S/he is a member of the Administrative Team and is responsible for regularly attending the scheduled meetings of that team.  S/he supervises the Outreach Coordinator.
  4. Internal Contacts: The Development Manager will potentially interact with all staff members and the residents Ruth’s House of Hope supports.  Primary contacts will be with the Administrative Team.
  5. External Contacts:  The Development Manager will interact with all the constituencies of Ruth’s House of Hope and the community at large.  Primary contacts will be with the Development (fundraising) Committee of the Board of Trustees, donors, and volunteers.
  6. Responsibilities and Duties:  The Development Manager is responsible for ensuring that the following responsibilities are completed promptly and to the best of his/her abilities:

    Representing:

      • the organization in a positive and professional manner.
      • Administrative Team decisions to people in a positive and professional manner.
      • Community Relations on the Administrative Team.

    Communicating:         

      • the organization’s mission statement to the communities in which Ruth’s House of Hope operates and encouraging others to do likewise.
      • an understanding of the basic Ruth’s House of Hope philosophies to all contacts with the various aspects of the program(s).
      • with outside individuals, including, but not limited to, donors and sponsors.
      • with the Administrative Team and the Executive Director in a manner that demonstrates advanced verbal and written communications that are sensitive to tone, audience, and applicable politics.
      • in a manner that is persuasive to others through the use of effective strategies, arguments, and materials.

    Developing:

      • and monitoring annual budgets for each area of responsibility.
      • and managing the implementation of all development campaigns, including fundraising events and the annual fundraising plan in conjunction with the Fundraising Committee, the Executive Director, and the Board of Trustees.
      • and managing annual public relations and marketing plans for the Organization.
      • procedures for carrying out the plans and policies of the community relations program(s).
      • systems for updating, tracking, and evaluating donor gifts and gift records, including gifts-in-kind.

    Analyzing:                

      • markets and audiences, and planning effective appeals.
      • gift records and gifts.
      • campaign results for effectiveness.

    Promoting:                    

      • Ruth’s House of Hope through verbal, online, and written presentations in the communities where the Organization desires a presence, using the marketing framework.

    Managing                       

      • public relations, development, and marketing programs, including coordinating consultants and contractors related to these programs.
      • the preparation of materials and/or content of approved programs, including, but not limited to, proposals, donor recognition, appeals, and newsletters.
      • online presence, including social media posting and sites.

    Serving:                          

      • as administrative staff support to the Development (fundraising)
      • as a liaison to committees, task forces, and Organizations, as determined conjunctively with the Executive Director and Administrative Team.

    Planning:                        

      • investigating, negotiating, coordinating, and evaluating pertinent aspects of the Organization in conjunction with the Board of Trustees, the Development (fundraising) Committee, the Executive Director, and the Administrative Team.

    Creating:

      • results as outlined in the Strategic Plan.

    Achieving:

      • revenue goals by building and maintaining relationships with corporate partners and donors.

     

    Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.

  7. Decision-Making Responsibilities:  The Development Manager has the authority to make administrative-level decisions based on a clear understanding of all the pertinent factors and taking into consideration those decisions with which the Executive Director, Board of Trustees and/or Development (fundraising) Committee must be involved.
  8. Knowledge and Education:  The Development Manager must be generally familiar with marketing, public relations, and development practices.  Additionally, s/he must have a basic understanding of social service agencies, public and private.  Experience or education in grant-writing, governing boards, development practices, public relations, and marketing is highly desirable.  Computer skills, including functional knowledge and use of databases, spreadsheets, online research, and social media programs are essential, as is proficiency in basic mathematics to be able to formulate budgets and create reports.
  9. Skills and Abilities:  The Development Manager must exhibit the skills to successfully approach and interact with a variety of people in diverse settings.  S/he must meet the highest ethical standards and understand the laws regarding charitable donations. S/he must have exceptional verbal and written expressive communication skills and exceptional receptive communication skills.  S/he must be able to manage multiple priorities successfully, have excellent time management skills, and be highly organized to manage multiple priorities, determine project urgency practically, create detailed action plans, and organize and schedule people and tasks effectively.
  10. Experience:  The Development Manager must have a broad range of community experiences, including settings involving volunteers, and, preferably, people experiencing homelessness.  S/he should have a minimum of two years of administrative-level management or leadership experience in community and/or not-for-profit settings.  S/he should have experience with gift campaigns and marketing intangibles.
  11. Core Competencies:

Requirements for Position

  • Prefer a bachelor’s degree or an associate degree in a related field, or CFRE certification
  • Must be professional with strong boundaries and ethics.
  • Must be able to work independently and also in a team.
  • Must be available to work occasional evenings, weekends, and all events.
  • Must be able to handle professional feedback.
  • Possesses good communication skills.
  • The ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Must be highly organized and have the ability to prioritize tasks.
  • Adherence to confidentiality practices.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets) and other relevant software applications, including donor management software. Ability to learn new software applications.
  • Ability to pass background checks.
  • Ability to lift 10-15 pounds.
  • Ability to do daily local travel up to 60%; requires access to reliable transportation at all times on an immediate basis.
  • Hybrid work environment: 40% in the office (2 days per week average).  You are expected to maintain reliable internet and phone service at remote workspace to effectively perform job duties.
